Every child deserves a “Meaningful Other” in his life

“Meaningful Other” is a term that originates from the field of social sciences and is defined as; an external adult, not a parent or relative, that is present to guide, elevate, and believe in the child or adolescent. That “Meaningful other” creates a safe space where dreams, ambitions, and fears can be shared and discussed openly. These early stages of life are when our character and personalities are moulded and developed. This is the most crucial time for guidance and support.  The “Meaningful Other” will be an essential building block in the character development of the child throughout the years.

 

After much guidance and support, a strong yet flexible backbone will be developed, that will help the child in multiple aspects of his or her life. Achieving life goals, building meaningful relationships, communicating in a healthy manor, all while being flexible with life. Having the ability, despite experiencing unsuccessful endeavours or disappointments from time to time, to rise and live a life full of meaning and passion.

The Magic Behind the Learning Strategies

We tend to view learning as something abstract – but it is not. Learning is building physical connections in the brain. All our knowledge is a part of an extensive neurological system. And just like we have learned how to activate the muscles in ballet or soccer, we also must learn how to activate the neurological system in the brain so that any learning meets the definitions of effective learning. A learning environment where you learn more, in less time, with pleasure and in such a way that the knowledge enters the long-term memory.

 

Once we understand that – everything is easier, why?

Because whenever we encounter a difficulty, we only must ask: “Which one of the strategies for managing *physical* connections and brain knowledge should I use now to create optimal comprehension and memory. Which strategy will strengthen and preserve the physical connections in my brain the way I want?

Dealing with a Sense of Failure

Before teaching a child to learn how to study, it is important that we know how to mediate the failing exams and the difficulty he faced with understanding the material until this point. This is a crucial step in the building blocks of the child’s self-confidence; self-confidence that leads to increased motivation – an increase in the level of investment (more dopamine in the brain) and an easier way to progress. With the correct and tailormade learning strategies, the child will understand and succeed – I have no doubt about that, since I speak with 20 years of experience from this field. It is important to pay attention and distinguish – I am referring to failing the exams and not the failure of the child. The child did not fail (at most, the rigid Ministry of Education system failed). Watch the video – It is extremely important!

Learning how to learn – What is the connection between an old childhood friend and learning strategies?

In this video I speak about importance of the course, learning how to learn, for all children with an emphasis on children with ADHD. Please note that even children who are not dealing with neurological ADHD are dealing with ADHD. We are in a very demanding world full of external stimuli. Every moment your child looks at the phone screen, his brain is filled with endless distractions, and that is just from a few minutes on the phone. Add to that the daily stress at school, life in a modern world and….what I call, internal stimuli – that is, feelings that burden us at times, thoughts and emotions that race through our minds, and more.
